Four more suspects, including an ex-army soldier were arrested in connection with the recent incidents of violence in Kandy, Police said. Police noted that the arrests were made during the weekend by the Terrorism Investigation Division of the Police (TID).
Two suspects, including a former army soldier were arrested today (1 April) for the destruction of private and religious property in Ambatenne, Poojapitiya.
The suspects, aged 37 and 46, are residents of Ambatenne and are scheduled to be produced before the Galagedara Magistrate’s Court.
The other two suspects were arrested on Friday (30) and Saturday (31) under the charges of riotous behavior and destruction of private and religious property in Digana.
The suspects, aged 40 and 30, residents of Rajawella and Katugastota, have been remanded until later this month. Police Spokesperson noted that further investigations, spearheaded by the TID, concerning several more suspects are currently underway.
Several suspects including one of the main instigators Amith Jeewan Weerasinghe are currently in remand custody over the attacks. Several suspects with political affiliations including, a recently-elected SLPP member of the Kundasale Pradeshiya Sabha was also arrested by the TID on 28 March for causing damages to businesses and places of religious worship at Digana, Kandy.
